Dumfries and Galloway is renowned for the birdwatching opportunities along the shores of the inner Solway Firth.

The Solway is one of the most important estuaries in the U.K. for the overwintering of wildfowl and waders during the winter.

At the Abbey Arms Hotel, we are perfectly positioned for the dedicated “twitcher” being located between the R.S.P.B. reserve at Mersehead and the WWT reserve at Caerlaverock together with the Red Kites at Loch Ken.


The major attractions include;

Red Kite

Mersehead R.S.P.B. a major overwintering site for Barnacle Geese and  Pinkfoots www.rspb.org uk - (click here to visit site).

Caerlaverock WWT reserve is a major overwintering site for Barnacle Geese, Pinkfoots and Whooper Swans. In addition Peregrine falcons,Merlin and the rare Hen Harrier can be seen.
It is also home to the rare Natterjack toad,otters,badgers  and dragon flies.
Puffin
Galloway Red Kite Trail. Red Kites were reintroduced To Dumfries and Galloway around Loch Ken in 2001.They are now establishing a new population.

There are numerous other areas to see birdsin the area and we can supply full details and directions on request. There are numerous birds to be seen within walking distance of the hotel.

Dumfries nand Galloway is a real treasure trove for all who enjoy wildlife many areas being within easy reach of the Abbey Arms. We can provide packed lunches and flasks for those wanting to spend a day watching nature at work.
