Mountain Biking

The first bicycle in the world was invented in Dumfries and Galloway in 1840, and the area  provides some of the best mountain biking trails in Scotland.

The Abbey Arms Hotel is an ideal base for riding three of the “Seven Stanes”, the premier mountain biking trails in Scotland.

These are:

Mabie Forest (3 miles),one of the early leaders in mountain bike courses in Scotland. It is renowned for its expert level north-shore (  tricky wooden trails ), the longest known as “The Dark Side”. Mabie does however have many other routes for all level of skills.

Forest of Ae(20 mls) offering a superb downhill course for experts together with easier routes.

Dalbeattie (12 miles), renowned for its massive “slab” rock feature.

In addition there is Drumlanrig, only a half hour drive away.
There are 8 trails set in a more natural environment suitable for all levels of skills, This is also where the only Scottish museum of cycling is to be found.

To make your stay as comfortable as possible, we can provide:
  1. Secure bike storage
  2. Bike washing facilities
  3. Limited workshop facilities
  4. Packed Lunches
